CANDACE COSTON

Experience:I have practiced behavioral therapy for ten years following my 2012 graduation from University of North Carolina in Wilmington. The populations I have served during that time have varied greatly. I have worked with children under 10 whose behaviors disrupted the success they could accomplish at home, school, and other environments. I also helped children ages 12-19 who needed behavioral health services to identify their needs and how they could get their needs met, which also allowed them to meet the societal needs placed upon them (appropriate school performance, eliminating or reducing involvement in the juvenile justice system, and improving interactions with those within the child’s home). For years, I worked with adults with dual diagnoses of mental health and developmental disabilities. I am currently working with the military population where I do individual and couples therapy.

Training & Certifications:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • MSW

Desired populations:I have experience working with couples, children, people of color, LGBTQ+, Christian, spiritual, neurodivergent, and individual therapy.

Treatment modalities:Attachment theory, CBT, DBT, solution focused, motivational interviewing, expressive therapy, and somatic experiencing therapy. My treatment approaches include learning what brings my clients joy, what they enjoy doing, who is important to them, and goals they have. I then dig deep into these elements to identify values systems, core values, and how clients view themselves. From there, I ask in what way I can assist them in getting to their destination. The destination can be mental, emotional, physical, or interpersonal.

I have experience with clients that have symptoms of anxiety, trauma, depression, traumatic brain injury, low self-esteem, poor self-image, self-critical, impulsivity related to anger, difficulty adjusting, grief, and loss.
